Question 7

"I was a coward. I went to war." O'Brien states in "On the Rainy River." "Draft dodgers," as they were called, used a variety of means to escape being sent into war. How else did people avoid the draft other than running away to Canada? What would YOU have done under the circumstances? What is your personal opinion of draft dodgers?

  1. I do not think that it was okay, for the most part, that the draft dodgers ran away from their duty. Unless they have a good reason not to, they should do their duty to the country. If I was drafted I would go to war to serve my country. Some might have broken an arm or a leg or run away to Canada. They may have gone to college.

  2. Primary post- Other ways people escape going to war is by running to Mexico. People also get injured on purpose so they won't pass the physical examination. If I was in the same situation of O'brien I wouldn't want to go to war, but I wouldn't try to run to Canada. I think draft dodgers are scared. Draft dogders don't want to go to war that is why they run. Draft dodgers might be too ashamed of not going to war and that is why they run to Canada.

People tried to avoid going to war mainly by trying to escape the country. The men and women who dodge the draft should be ashamed of themselves. This is their country and the are taking the easy way out by not fighting for their country. I'd be upset to go myself but I wouldn't leave. I'd be strong and mentally tough and do what I had to do. Sometimes you got to do what you got to do right?

Other then going to Canada peo ple would fake a sickness. Also they would break an arm or some other bine so they couldn't pass the physical exam. Oteher people would fake a mental illness to get past the draft. If i were drafted i probaly would have been a draft dodger. I don't think i could go to war. Or i would have gine ti college. I can't say anything bad about draft dodgers because i would have probably been one.

People also avoided the draft by running to other countries, or physically injuring themselves so that they would not beaccepted into the war. If I was drafted I would be really mad, but I think would still go to war, because it would be the righht thing to do. Also i would be afraid of the consequences of running away from the war. I think draft dodgers have there reasons for what they do, but i don't think it's the right thing to do.

I agree with Alisha and Michelle in how most soldiers would injure themselves on purpose. Also the soldiers could fake an illness. I also agree with what Dom and Katrina said in how if they got drafted they would just go for their country

Some people tried to hide or flee to other countries just to get away from being drafted. I personally agree with them just because I believe if you don't believe I. The war then you shouldn't have to fight it. You shouldn't be force to fight for a cause you don't believe in when you could be doing better things that you actually want to do and believe in.

I agree with kayla and her comment because I would say that people ran away and either injured something on their bodies or committed suicide. If I was drafted I too would be incredbly angry and I would not know what to do with myself. Even though running away might be the easiest solution i too agree that it is the ffrigeht thing to do to go to the war sand fight.

I agree with Kayla, there are other means of getting out of the war. But if I was drafted, I wouldn't purposely injer myself to get out of the draft. I think it's ridiculous that people would go to that extent instead of simply going to war..

I completely agree with Katrina. If you don't have anything better going on in your life like college, it really is depressing that you would skip out on your job to the country that has held you and protected you your whole life.

I agree with dclicks cash money 22, people would have escaped to a different country or face a sickness or disease. Since dom would be strong and mentally tough I think that's great but I couldnt go through that I would make an accident every 2 seconds hahah. That is why i agreed with him in the first place because of his bravery and morals.

O'Brien says that he is a coward for not going tho the war because he knows that the was to scared to not go to war. He knew people would think of him badly. Instead of running to Canada people might not have even been drafted because they were planning on going to a college. Also when people got drafted they would self injure themselves making them unable to go to war. In the back of my mind I would want to run away and not go to war, but I would know that the right thing to do would be to go. I don't rally have an opinion on draft dodgers because I'm not even sure what I would do, go to war, or hide.

I agree with Bilal on the fact that I'm the man... But, in all seriousness I would like to know what you would do B. I'd go to war and tough it out, while you'd stay home scared to make a mistake? Are you going to be scared to make mistakes all your life? You were born in Canada so you're going to run back to your home country B? You took a citizen test to be here and now you should be willing to fight for your new country... Grow up Bilal.

Personally i dont think it is right to be a "draft dodger." I understand why people might run away from the draft but they should serve their duty and yough t out. Many people would escape to Canada and even Mexico to get out of the draft. Also people would ham themself so they wouldnt pass the physical to get in. If i got drafted i would go to war and tough it out. It might be hard but its better doing it and getting it over with than escaping to different countries.

People avoided the draft by probably going to another country. They might have changed there identity. Alsobthey might have hid in other peoples house. Under these circumstances I would go to war. I think draft dodgers should be punished by being expelled from this country an shunned.

  16. I don't think that it is right it be a draft dodger. I understand that people would be afraid to go to war and fight but they should toughen up and go to war. it is your duty to fight for your country if you get drafted. If I got drafted I would not be a coward and run away to Canada or Mexico. I would pack my stuff and go off and fight for my country.
