Question 1

Since this is a work of fiction, it is unclear as to what actually happened to O'Brien and what he fabricated for the stories. How does this affect your thoughts on the text? Does knowing that it is fiction change your opinion or feeling about any of the work?

Question 2

How does shame fit into O'Brien's portrayal of the war experience? Should soldiers ever feel ashamed?

Question 3

Mary Anne Bell is a typical American seventeen year old. She is in love with her boyfriend, comes for a visit, and ends up staying forever. What happens to Mary Anne Bell in "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong?" What causes the transformation in her? What does this say about the Vietnam experience? Why would a girl like her want to be there?

Question 4

In "Speaking of Courage," the narrator says, "Sometimes the bravest thing on earth was to sit through the night and feel the cold in your bones. Courage was not always a matter of yes or no." How does the narrator define courage? How do you define it?

Question 5

In the title story, how do the things the men carry help define them as individuals? What are some of the more interesting items? Which "things" were unexpected? What would you carry if you went to war? Why?

Questions 6

In war, soldiers are often morally compromised to the point that they can't tell the difference between right and wrong anymore. Give specific examples of "right" (moral) and "wrong" (amoral) behavior that you can see evidence of in the stories you have read.

Question 7

"I was a coward. I went to war." O'Brien states in "On the Rainy River." "Draft dodgers," as they were called, used a variety of means to escape being sent into war. How else did people avoid the draft other than running away to Canada? What would YOU have done under the circumstances? What is your personal opinion of draft dodgers?
